About the School

Advanced training on hybrid thermal energy storage

The program is structured to provide a comprehensive and practical learning experience. The core is delivered through lessons organized across three levels: Technological (covering ES maturity and systems like low-to high-temperature storage, hybrid solutions, etc.), Sustainability and Development (analyzing economic, social, and policy factors, including new technological trends), and Case Studies (examining real-world applications and the role of initiatives like Mission Innovation and HORIZON 2020/Horizon Europe).
Beyond traditional lectures, the school places a high value on hands-on and real-world exposure. Participants will engage in laboratory experiences with visits to research centers, such as the University of Messina and the CNR ITAE. Furthermore, the program is enriched by industrial talks and visits involving CEOs or employees from leading companies in the sector. A key feature is the field visit to an industrial reality (e.g. A2A, ...), which provides tangible insight into how industrial operations integrate sustainability and value production, concluding with an open table discussion. This integrated approach, combining academic approach, research experience, and industrial perspective, aims to foster broad scientific and social interest and collaboration.

How to reach Messina

Getting to Messina is easy thanks to sea connections for cars and trains from Villa San Giovanni (20 minutes) or the nearby airports of Catania and Reggio Calabria. The main options include the A2 motorway to Villa San Giovanni, direct trains with a ferry, or flights to Catania (100 km) followed by bus/train.

How to reach Messina
  • By Car: Take the Mediterranean motorway (A2) to Villa San Giovanni, then board the Caronte & Tourist or Traghettilines ferries (approximately 20-30 minutes). Various round-trip and vehicle ferry options are available.

  • By Train: The recommended arrival station is Messina Centrale, accessible by direct trains with ferries or by arriving at Villa San Giovanni and taking a high-speed Blu Jet hydrofoil.

  • By Plane: The closest airport is Reggio Calabria (REG), connected by hydrofoils, while the main hub is Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA). From Catania, there are frequent bus services (about 2 hours) or trains to Messina.
