The closest airports to Messina are the International airport of Catania-Fontanarossa (108 km from
Messina), with a high number of flights to and from various Italian and European cities, and the
Reggio Calabria airport (30 km from Messina, beyond the Strait), with a limited number of
domestic flights.
From Catania airport, out of the arrivals terminal, you need to take a shuttle of the SAIS company,
whose timetables are found here. The shuttle takes approx. 1 hour and a half to get to Messina and
stops near the Messina train station, in the center, close to both the University and the main city
hotels.
From Reggio Calabria airport, exiting the arrivals terminal, you can take either the shuttle or the
taxi to the port (about 20 minutes journey), and then, from the port, the hydrofoil to Messina (about
20 minutes crossing).
Arriving by Train
Not many trains arrive at Messina Centrale station. Many more arrive instead at the station of Villa
San Giovanni, in Calabria. From the station of Villa San Giovanni it is necessary to take the ferry to
Messina (about 20 minutes of crossing).
How to get to University of Messina
The University of Messina is located in the city center, in Piazza Pugliatti 1, and is therefore easily
reachable either on foot or by taxi from any area of the center. Once in Piazza Pugliatti, you have to
enter through the central door of the Rectorate and follow the signs for the conference. There is a second entrance from Via dei Verdi, 75. For those
staying in North Messina, near the sea, you can take either the tram from the Museum terminus, any
bus that runs along the coastal road (via Consolare Pompea) towards the center, or a taxi.
Tram and bus tickets can be purchased at newsagents and tobacconists and must be stamped on
board. The tram route from the terminus (Museum stop) to the closest stop to the University
(Cairoli) is approx. 20 minutes. From the Cairoli stop to the University it takes approx. 7 minutes
on foot.
